I know his name alone lent critical power to our campaigns to protect and free political prisoners in many nations, from communist Eastern Europe to apartheid South Africa and dictatorships all around the globe. Rhode Island activists for peace, for human rights and social justice had the same experience. By using his both his unearned advantages and earned positions to their fullest for others, he inspired and empowered all of us. He treated our work as important and worthy of his engaged attention and assistance. By honoring our efforts as citizens , Senator Pell gave us all courage and heart to try to change the world.
