Lynch calls on Carcieri to 'lead by example' and freeze hiring for DOA job postings

Providence - William J. Lynch, chairman of the RI Democratic Party, today called on Governor Donald Carcieri not to fill two high paid deputy director positions in the Department of Administration. Prompted by the advertisement of the positions, Lynch says that Governor Carcieri should lead by example and control his own spending rather than attempting to solve the budget gap through furloughs, layoffs and pay cuts for rank and file state employees. The salaries for the two vacant positions range from $110,549 to $122,560 a year.

"Just several months ago the Governor campaigned for reelection by telling us all how great the state was doing. Now that Election Day has passed the Governor has suddenly learned that we are facing a fiscal crisis. Now as he often does Governor Carcieri says one thing and does another. While making speeches about belt tightening and the need for the branches of state government to work together to fill the large budget gap, the governor wants to fill positions at a cost of over $200,000. This is a perfect opportunity for him to lead by example and help reduce government spending through attrition," Lynch says.

The job descriptions for the positions are as follows: "To be responsible for assisting the director of administration by planning, developing, and directing the implementation of multi-faceted and integrated statewide policies and program objectives; to direct program operations which cross departmental missions…to evaluate possible program linkages and consolidation with similar/related functions within other agencies of state government."

"The governor talks about sacrifice. When he proposes wage cuts for workers making $25,000 a year while at the same time attempting to fill two positions with salaries that are four times as much, I question how in touch he is with the average working family," continued Lynch.
