No more cheap stunts

Lynch to Carcieri: 'Get back to the table'

Dem. Chairman reminds the governor that governing is about more than just 'easy' sound bites

PAWTUCKET- Rhode Island Democratic Party Chairman Bill Lynch is calling for Governor Carcieri to immediately return to the bargaining table with state employees and negotiate a compromise that is equitable to both the taxpayers and the union.

"Yesterday, the governor essentially took his ball and went home," said Chairman Lynch. "This is nothing more than a desperate public relations stunt from an administration that grows increasingly frustrated as it finds itself less and less relevant."

"This is simply another ill-though-out proposal from the Carcieri administration. I wonder if this idea will go the same way as the Governor's homeland security debacle or the mysterious 'Big Audit' that proved to be little more than smoke and mirrors?"

"The governor has been in private negotiation with this union for months, and now, at the last minute he walks away from the table? Either he is incapable of negotiating in good faith, or lacks the leadership skills necessary to effectively manage this state."

"I find it odd that the governor now decries a contract he negotiated and ultimately signed. He is the one responsible for this deal but in the eleventh hour, with the General Assembly ready to unveil the state budget, the governor has reverted back to his usual gimmicks," Lynch said.

"The governor tells us he wants to outsource even more state jobs. Perfect! More 102 thousand dollar-a-year typists! One thing we can be sure of: some staffing company is going to make out pretty good with a sweetheart, no-bid deal."

"Today I'm calling on Governor Carcieri to do the right thing. Drop all the made-for-TV stunts and get back to the bargaining table to negotiate a fair and responsible contract with the state employees," Lynch said.
