STATEMENT BY R.I. DEMOCRATIC PARTY CHAIR JOSEPH M. MCNAMARA ON U.S. SENATE REPUBLICANS ‘SLOW-WALKING’ URGENTLY-NEEDED COVID-19 RELIEF PACKAGE FOR AMERICANS

WARWICK, R.I. (Feb. 4, 2021) – “As of today, more than 2,200 Rhode Islanders have died and countless others hospitalized by the dreaded Covid-19 pandemic – worsened chiefly because of the failed leadership of the last President and his Republican Congress,” said Rhode Island Democratic Party Chair Joseph M. McNamara Thursday.

“Now that Trump is no longer able to wage war on Americans through this crisis, it’s time the Republican Senators did something to slow the impact of the illness even further,” McNamara said. “Stop the game-playing. These are American lives we’re talking about: and they’re your family, friends and voters, too.”

“If passed, this legislation will help reopen a majority of our K-8 classrooms within 100 days, aid the nearly 18 million workers relying on jobless benefits for rent and food, provide COVID vaccine distribution and mental health care to our veterans, and loans and grants to small businesses,” he said.

“I ask you all to take a stand, do the right thing – now – for your constituents and for all Americans. Pass President Biden’s American Rescue Plan today: history will judge us all, on how this is handled,” McNamara said.
